Making Stuff People Want: the biggest upstream problem in designing a solution.
It's why PMF is so tricky in the startup world.
I would see this gap time and time again: whether it’s innovating products for a large consumer brand or designing a productized service for a solopreneur.
“It’s not about you...”
That distinction, however, can feel harder when you’re creating a personal venture that’s frankly...all about your expertise and what you have to share!
Here’s a simple litmus test to make sure you get razor-sharp clarity that your product is focused on the people you serve: not ONLY about your product features, knowledge, talents, or even contribution.
Note: there can be many more than 10, but start here to list 8 things you solve for others, and 2 things you solve for yourself.
P.S. if you have an "I already know this" response to this very simple exercise, I challenge you to write them down swiftly in under 1 min!
#knowthyself
Here’s my example:
- Clarity on why YOU are suited to solve X
- Empathy for WHO you serve specifically
- Articulation of your deeper WHY
- Creating options on WHAT your solution looks like
- Designing the HOW of your monetization vehicle
- Roadmap on the WHEN of your milestones
- Accountability on achieving your goals
- Consistency with your inner practice to stay centered
- Be of service while mastering a craft
- Design the life I want to live daily
Your turn! I'd love to read your 80/20 solutions.
